What is the Bar Nursery?
Originally set up in London in 2013, the first Bar Nursery was at Smithfield House Children’s Nursery. This site provides parents working in London with high quality childcare that meets the multiple and complex needs of barristers and other chamber staff. The London nursery was, and continues to be, a huge success, and so, with many barristers working and living in and around Leeds, it made sense to open one in the area.
Chantal-Aimée Doerries QC, Chairman of the Bar, said: ‘The nature of a barrister’s career means that they work often unpredictable hours, are expected in court at short notice, or have to take a long break from their careers in order to be able to manage childcare. Most barristers are self-employed, which can make balancing childcare with your work challenging. Becoming a parent should not be a bar to a career as a barrister. The Bar Nursery is just one way the Bar Council is trying to make life easier for those practising barristers who are parents.’
Tiny Tree Day Nursery
Tiny Tree is open from 7.30am – 6.00pm however we are able to open until 7pm by prior arrangement for barristers and their chamber staff. It caters for children from six weeks to pre-schoolers. For primary school children, there is a holiday club which also operates 7.30am – 6.00pm. Again, with prior notice, the club can be kept open until 7pm for barristers and other chamber staff.
